Video call.

That afternoon, I get a video call on my phone while Cam, Tristan, and I are unloading groceries.

Well... they’re unloading. I’m mostly just watching and keeping company.

I look at my phone and see that my mom is calling. My heart races when I see her name. I haven’t gotten to talk to her since New York. She doesn’t know what happened, but I’m still nervous.

I don’t want my family to know what is going on. They would just worry. They don’t know how good Spy School is. They don’t know how good my guys are.

Whoever is terrorizing me won’t be a problem long.

I step away from the kitchen and pantry to answer my phone. When I answer, I’m surprised to see Charlotte and Chloe’s faces on my screen and not my mother’s face.

Charlotte is five, turning six soon, and Chloe turned three while I was away at school. I haven’t seen either of them since August and it’s so surreal to see them on my screen. Both of them have grown up so much.

Charlotte’s blonde hair is getting darker. I’m starting to think she’s going to have my mother’s dark brown hair. She’s also missing two front teeth and she has freckles spread across her nose.

Chloe is losing her chubby baby cheeks, which makes me a little sad. Her hair is still the light shade of blonde it always was, maybe even a little lighter from being out in the sun, and she is sitting there like a good girl, not screaming and running around like usual. I’m used to Chloe being super hyper. This is different.

“Zara!” Chloe squeals when she sees me.

“Hey, Zara,” Charlotte says, her voice calm.

When did Charlotte become a little woman? She’s so cute.

“Hey Chloe and Charlotte.” I try to hold back the tears pressing against the back of my eyes.

I sit down at the dining room table to talk to them.

This is the kind of dining room you never eat in. You know... the kind with a chandelier hanging down and a beautiful, white rug. This is where you sit at Christmas and Thanksgiving. It almost feels out of place for such a formal room to be in this beach house.

“I got an A on my math test,” Charlotte says, holding up her math test for me.

“Daddy got me pony.” Chloe beams as she says it.

Charlotte’s eyes light up. “He bought us a pony. A real pony. It’s white and it’s so cute! It’s an early Christmas present.”

I grin, loving that they’re so happy. I would’ve loved to get a horse when I was a kid too, but my mom and dad never would’ve allowed it. They would’ve deemed it ‘too dangerous.’ I wonder what they’d think now if they knew what kind of school I’m really going to.

“Zara come home for Christmas.” Chloe says it like a statement and not a question.

I sigh, wishing I could tell her that I am definitely coming home for Christmas, but the truth is, I don’t know. And I don’t want her to get her hopes up, thinking I could walk through the door.
